Art as environmental Advocacy:
This subject has been a pursuit of the Portland, Oregon
based group ORLO for over a decade. Following
their lead OLYecology pursues eco-advocacy through poetry, photography, painting,
music and theater. As OLYecology continues to grow more artists are joining
our cause. Current art projects can be viewed at Peace
From Trees and also at Myspace.
If you’re an artist who wants to raise awareness about our mama earth’s
needs, please get in touch with us!
Digest and Disseminate Eco-information: The most crucial role of every ecology center is notifying the public of what’s going on. Our work at translating complex scientific documentation into easy to understand concepts that we can all act on is an essential purpose. We do this by making Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, as well as groundtruthing timber sales, monitoring toxins, as well as networking with other activists. OLYecology periodically sets up an information table at the Olympia Co-op, as well as at various local events. Currently our most popular project is a weblog / email distribution service called ‘This Week in Trees.’ This service provides a bi-weekly summary of approximately 70 forest oriented news articles from around the world. OLYecology also has a daily presence in many, many email listserves throughout the PNW and beyond.
Healing Gardens: How you feel when you
look out the windows of where you live, how you feel when you hang around the
outside your home, it can have a huge influence on how you feel about the world
you live in. Deane Rimerman, director of the OLYecology center has over a decade
of experience as a professional landscaper and designer. His step by step garden
beautification process is a service he’s donating in order to help raise
money for OLYecology. His expert knowledge of tree pruning, and how to create
a nature-friendly garden is available at very reasonable rates. Deane’s
favorite type of garden is what’s called a “healing garden.”
These kinds of gardens are part therapy, part exercise, part relaxation and
inspiration. The design concept revolves around growing a garden that is reflection
of your own personal growth, of championing inner-battles, finding personal
wellness and healing. For more info contact Deane at OLYecology.
