Commissioner of Public Lands in 2008?
The Commissioner of Public Lands in Washington State oversees the management of 5 million acres of state land and 12 million acres of privately owned forest land. In the year 2000 the current Commissioner, Republican Douglas Sutherland, was elected into office. Sutherland was then re-elected in 2004 for another four year term.
Under Sutherland’s watch there have been attemptst to increase logging on public lands by 30%, as well as attempts to weaken protection for rare older forests. Also under Sutherland state employees with business ties to the timber industry were allowed to represent the state's interests in negotiating for Salmon habitat protection.
